Description:
This regimental flag is made of a red piece of silk embroidered with the coat of arms of the United States. Below the coat of arms is a castle and below that is a ribbon bearing the regimental designation. It reads “TWENTYFIRST U.S. ENGINEERS”. There are faded bands from the corner of the upper hoist edge to the bottom edge where the flag was exposed to light in the Capitol cases. A white fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edge of the flag. The hoist end was fashioned into a sleeve for attachment to the staff.
The staff, which measures 88” by 1.25”, is topped by a spade-shaped finial. A rounded cap is attached to the bottom of the staff.
The flag has a 109” red, white, and blue twisted cord with two red, white, and blue tassels measuring 1.5” in diameter. There is also a red ribbon with battle honors on it. The ribbon reads “ST. MIHIEL Offensive, France SEPT. 12-SEPT. 16, 1918” “MEUSE-ARGONNE Offensive, France OCT. 9-NOV. 11, 1918”.
