SC-142-90: Silk national Dimensions: 53” x 62” Fringe

Description:

This 45-star silk national flag was made by Henderson Ames Co.  The stars are embroidered in an 8-7-8-7-8-7 pattern.  The regimental designation is embroidered on the fifth red stripe and reads “31ST MICH. VOL. INFANTRY”.  The fly edge of the flag is tattered, especially on the white stripes.  A gold-colored fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edge of the flag.  The hoist end was fashioned into a sleeve for attachment to the staff.

The staff, which measures 97” by 1.25” is missing a finial.  The staff is made of two pieces with a collar to attach them together.  A plaque on the staff has a maker’s mark.  In the center is a shield with “REGALIA, PARAPHERNALIA, UNIFORMS” in the center.  Above the shield is the company name “The HENDERSON AMES CO”.  To the left of the shield reads “FLAGS” and to the right “BANNERS”.  Below the shield reads “MILITARY AND BAND GOODS KALAMAZOO, MICH.”

The flag has a 104” blue and white twisted cord.  It appears that there were once tassels attached to the cord, but they are missing.
