A Birthday Surprise!

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, Save The Flags hosted a “birthday party” for Sarah Whitus and some of her family and close friends.  Sarah is very passionate about studying the Civil War, including visiting battlefields and historic sites. Her mother Deb approached us about the possibility of viewing the collection as a birthday surprise for her daughter. This group of young people were passionate and very knowledgeable about the war and the battle flags and the service and sacrifice that took place beneath them. It was our pleasure to assist in providing what hopefully was a memorable birthday for Sarah. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Whitus family for their kind support in helping us preserve the battle flags.

Pictured (below, left to right) are Allison VonArx, Andrew Turner, Sarah Whitus, Paulette Turner, and Deb and Alex Whitus, in front of the 24th Michigan’s Gettysburg flag.  Sarah is proudly wearing a replica Hardee hat, worn by the famed Iron Brigade—"The Damned Black Hats” -which included the 24th Michigan Infantry Regiment.
