30th Michigan Volunteer Infantry

SC-104-90: Silk national Dimensions: 73” x 70” Fringe

Description:

This 35-star silk national has gold painted stars arranged in five rows of seven.  The flag is relatively intact, but there are a lot of splits in the silk, particularly in the white stripes.  A gold-colored fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edge.  The hoist edge was fashioned into a sleeve for attachment to the staff.

The staff, which measures 88.25” by 1.25”, is topped by a spade-shaped finial.  The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “30th Mich. Infantry”.

The flag has a 144” blue and white twisted silk cord with two blue and white tassels which are 2” in diameter.  The tassels were formed over a wooden core.

SC-112-90: Silk regimental Dimensions: 74” x 75” Fringe

Description:

This silk regimental flag is painted with the federal eagle in the center and two arcing rows of stars above.  The top arc contains twenty stars and the bottom arc has fifteen.  A red painted ribbon below the eagle contains the regimental designation.  It reads “30th. Reg’t. MICH. INFANTRY”.  The flag is very intact, but there is some splitting, particularly in the painted areas and along the fly edge.  A gold-colored fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edge.  The hoist end was fashioned into a pole sleeve for attachment to the staff.

The staff, which measures 93.5” by 1.25”, is missing a finial, but has a flange where a finial would have attached.  The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “30th Mich. Infantry”.

The flag has a 126” blue and white twisted silk cord with two blue and white tassels which are 2” in diameter.  The tassels were formed over a wooden core.
