25th Michigan Volunteer Infantry

SC-85-90: Silk regimental Dimensions: 75” x 78” Fringe

Description:

This silk regimental flag is painted with the federal eagle in the center of the flag.   There is a lot of loss in the center of the eagle, likely due to the paint making the silk brittle.  Above the eagle are two arcing rows of gold-colored stars with eighteen stars in the top arc and sixteen stars in the bottom arc.  A gold and red painted ribbon features the regimental designation below the eagle.  It reads “25th MICHIGAN REGIMENT INFANTRY”.  The flag is painted with battle honors.  A line of battle honors across the top of the flag reads “KNOXVILLE KINGSTON MOSSY CREEK ROCKY FACE RESACCA”.  On the left of the top arc battle honors read “DALLAS DECATUR”.  On the right of the top arc the battle honors read “ALLATOONA NASHVILLE”.  Battle honors painted in a circle around the eagle and between the two arcs read “JONESBORO LOST MT. CULPS FARM KENESAW MT. NICK-A-JACK CREEK ATLANTA”.  Below the second arc of stars and above the eagle’s head reads “TEBBS BEND July 4, 1863”.  Below the eagle’s wings, the battle honors read “UTOY CREEK FRANKLIN”.  A gold-colored fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edge of the flag.  The hoist edge was fashioned into a sleeve for attachment to the staff.

The staff, which measures 87.25” by 1.25”, is topped by a spherical finial that appears to be broken off at the top.  The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “25th Mich. Infantry”.

No tassels or cords remain.

SC-92-90: Silk national Dimensions: 72.5” x 74” Fringe

Description:

This silk national flag is very fragmentary with a small amount of silk from the top fly edge and bottom hoist edge remaining.  Almost the entire canton is missing, so it is impossible to determine the number of stars.  A small amount of gold-colored fringe remains on the top edge of the flag.  A cotton reinforcing sleeve which was covered by the silk of the flag was used to attach the flag to the staff.  Most of the reinforcing sleeve remains.

The staff, which measures 88.5” by 1.25”, is topped by a spade-shaped finial.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “25th Mich. Infantry”.

The flag has a 96” blue and white twisted silk cord with two blue and white tassels measuring 2” in diameter.  The tassels were formed over a wooden core.

Adoption:

May 23, 1998 - Cameron Davis, Deborah Gosselin, Erik H. Lindquist, Kris Jacobusse Lindquist, and Charles Ten Brink
