16th Michigan Volunteer Infantry

SC-60-90: Silk regimental Dimensions: 71”x 75” Fringe

Description:

This silk regimental flag is painted with the federal eagle in the center and two arced rows of stars above.  The top arc contains twenty-one stars, and the bottom arc contains fourteen stars.  A painted red ribbon below the eagle bears the regimental designation “16TH MICH. VETERAN VOL. INFY.”  The flag is filled with gold painted battle honors arranged in seventeen rows.  The top three rows and the last are continuous but the middle rows are divided by the eagle design.  There is a lot of loss on the fly edge on the fly which makes it difficult to read the battle honors on that side.  Starting at the top, what remains of the battle honors read, “YORKTOWN HANOVER COURTHOUSE –“ “GAINES HILL WHITE-OAK SWAMP, MALVERN HI-” “TURKEY-BEND, BULL RUN, ANTIETAM,” “SHARPSBURG, FREDERICKSBURG, CHANCELLORSV-” “GETTYSBURG, MIDDL-” “BRISTO STATION, WILLIAMS-” “MINE RUN, APPA-” “LAUREL HILL, WIL-” “NO’TH-ANNA, SPOTTSY-” “MAGNOLIA SWAMP, TOLLOPUT-” “BAT OF PETERSB’RG, BETHSIDA-” “WELDON R.R. PETER-” “HATCHERS RUN, 1 -OR” “HATCHERS RUN, 2 PEEBL-” WHITE OAK -R’D. DABNEY-” FIVE FORKS QUAKER-” “LEES SURRENDER, APPOMATOX CRT-HO-”.  Gold colored fringe is attached on the top, bottom, and fly edge of the flag.  The hoist edge was fashioned into a sleeve for attachment to the staff.

The staff, which measures 88.5” by 1.25”, is topped by a spade-shaped finial.  The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “16th Mich. Infantry”.

The flag has a 128” blue and whited twisted silk cord and two 2” blue and white silk tassels.  The tassels are formed over a wooden core.

The flag was netted (sewn between layers of dyed net) in the 1960s in an early attempt at conservation.

SC-61-90: Silk national Dimensions: 71”x 69.5” Fringe

Description:

This silk national flag was painted with gold-colored stars arranged in two concentric ovals.  It is consistent with the arrangement of a 35-star flag, however only 25 of the stars remain as the flag is very fragmentary.  There is a lot of loss along the fly edge of the flag.  A small amount of gold-colored fringe is attached to the top and bottom of the flag.  The hoist end was fashioned into a sleeve for attachment to the staff.

The staff, which measures 93.5” by 1”, is missing a finial but has a flange where the finial would have attached.   The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “16th Mich. Infantry”.

No tassels or cords remain.

The flag was netted (sewn between layers of dyed net) in the 1960s in an early attempt at conservation.
