3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 9th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac
SC-138-90: Linen designating ▪ Dimensions: 56.5” x 65.5”
Description:
This designating flag is triangular shaped with most of the field being made of white linen and a wide blue linen strip on the hoist edge. A red applique shield featuring a blue cannon crossed over a white anchor is sewn in the middle of the white portion of the field. The fly edge is very tattered. A linen sleeve was attached to the hoist edge where a rope was threaded for attachment to the staff. The sleeve is stamped with the designation and maker’s mark. “9 ARMY CORPS 1 DIV. HORSTMANN PHILADELPHIA”
The staff, which measures 71” by 1.25”, is missing a finial. The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques. The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “1st Div. 9th A. C.”.
