10th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry
SC-125-90: Silk regimental ▪ Dimensions: 30” x 30” ▪ Fringe
Description:
This silk regimental flag is painted with the federal eagle in the center. Unlike most of the flags painted this way, the eagle lacks the standard “E. Pluribus Unum.” There is however a ribbon where the motto would normally appear, but the words were never added. Thirteen gold-colored stars are painted above. A stylized red and gold ribbon painted below the eagle features the regimental designation. It reads “MICHIGAN TENTH CAVALRY”. A gold-colored fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edges. The hoist edge was fashioned into a pole sleeve for attachment to the staff.
The staff, which measures 91” by 1”, is carved into a spear-shaped finial. The finial is broken off at the top. The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques. The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “10th Mich. Cavalry”.
