SC-140-90: Silk national Dimensions: 28.5” x 45.5” Gold Bullion Fringe

Description:

This swallowtail silk national flag has 34 stars arranged in rows in a 5-6-4-4-4-6-5 pattern.  A white applique rectangle painted with the federal eagle is sewn in the middle of the four-star rows, with two stars on each side.  Below the applique, two crossed cannons were painted. Applique red letters are sewn to the fourth and fifth white stripe.  They read “DE GOLYERS” “MICH. BATTERY”.  There are several tears in the flag and the bottom white stripe is particularly tattered.  A gold-bullion fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edge.  Four lighter blue silk ties were attached to the hoist edge to tie to the staff.

The staff, which measures 89.75” by 1.25”, is carved at the top into a wooden spear-shaped finial.  The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “Battery H 1st Arty”.

The flag has a 85” gold bullion cord with two gold bullion tassels measuring 2” in diameter.  The tassels were formed over a wooden core.

SC-141-90: Silk regimental Dimensions: 38.5” x 57” Fringe

Description:

This swallowtail silk regimental flag has red silk on the top and white silk on the bottom.  Painted in the center are crossed cannons.  The regimental designation is also painted in five arcing rows.  The three rows painted on the red silk above the cannons read “U.S.” “BATTERY” “H” and the two rows on the white silk below the cannon read “1st Michigan” “LIGHT ARTILLERY.”  There is a small amount of splitting in the white silk along the fly edge, but overall, the flag is quite intact.  A gold-colored silk fringe is attached to the top, bottom, and fly edge of the flag.  The hoist edge was fashioned into a sleeve for attachment to the staff.

The staff, which measures 91.25” by 1.25”, is missing a finial.  The staffs of flags returned to the state at the 1866 Detroit ceremony marking the end of the war all bear identical brass plaques.  The brass plaque reads in Spencerian script “Battery H 1st Arty”.
